RUN 2409 REPORT
Well, it was one of those strange nights where, having responsibility for the run report, my observations of the small, but lively H5 pack was to make for an interesting night (and sufficient content for several police statements).
It all started with me acting like a WWW referee keeping Sonar and Bees Dick apart. Literally arms out between them both carrying on like a couple of 9 year olds in the school yard. “He started it”, “Did not” nonsense. Should have let them scrap it out, the old dog versus the new kid on the block. A bit like a pissing contest but with these two squeakers, there was considerably less at stake and far less entertainment value.
Soon after, 20+ hashers gathered for Dishlicker’s chalk talk and we were on our way. The runners shot off as the walking group was split at the lights on Davey Street. It was immediately noticed that it was a clear night. One of those nights on the cusp of coming out of the winter darkness with sensational silhouettes of hills against the dark blue sky. Impressive, but ccccold. Lord Limp was complaining about the cold and subsequent shrinkage while Rotten was bragging about how big ‘Hers’ was, even bigger the Johnny Fuchacarcass’s. Er… that’s probably nothing the brag about, but I digress.
I chatted to Growler who brought me up to date on recent events, proudly letting me know she had earlier ‘trimmed up her nature strip’… any why not, such ‘maintenance’ is important as we want to look our best as we head for the summer months. Growler even used her 3 hours free power to charge the batteries in all her devices. Between the landscaping and the recharging, she’ll be showroom-ready by summer …
We made our way down to the rivulet with Bad News leading the call with various (and impressive) bugle tones. I thought he was signalling morse code, but I was later informed there were renditions of various marches and tunes which were recognised. So nice work Hash Horn. As we passed the back of Vaucluse Gardens it felt like a reveille or call to duty. Appropriate I thought.
Soon after I came up behind Thrillseeker, whom I’d overtake earlier. How is this possible? So I folIowed and at one stage heard him call the trail although I’m sure it was on chalk from several weeks ago, as buggered if I could see any recent trail. But I followed him anyway, until I didn’t. Whilst typing in a few notes into the phone for the run report I must have zigged when I should have zagged and lost trail (although I wasn’t convinced I/we were one it) and was alone in the cold, and dark. I followed my nose back towards the general direction of the On On and fortunately found trail again.
After what seemed a return loop to Rivulet Park where there was another run/walk split, we popped out at St John’s Hospital where I saw the runners’ silhouettes flash past. And there was Thrillseeker again (WTF).
Across the intersection with Davey Street and through Fitzroy Gardens, which was a nice way to close off the trail. I caught up with Grizzly for a chat whilst powerwalking. He informs he is a Glühwein (a traditional German hot mulled wine served during the winter and at Christmas) judge at Oktoberfest next month. Good news, bribes to judges (for the information of In The Raw) have not yet closed. So, as I negotiated the terms of a bribe, Griz and did a couple of loops around the Bierhalle to notch up a respectable 5k walk for the evening.
Good trail Dishy (assisted by Stunned Mullet). It was well marked and very enjoyable. Back at the On On, the steins flowed, delicious meals were served and merriment was enjoyed by all.
