RUN 2400 REPORT
Thrillseeker has earned a formidable reputation for setting runs so long and tortuous that half the pack is normally declared missing, while the other half is seen wandering home by moonlight, desperately trying to locate the On On. With this history in mind, expectations were understandably low. Visions of emergency rations, navigation equipment and a farewell note to loved ones were entirely reasonable.
But, against all odds, the run was absolutely fantastic.
Kudos to Thrillseeker: the trail was exceptionally well set, easy to follow and generously marked for both runners and walkers. Miraculously, runners and walkers alike returned to the Maypole before the advertised food time of 7:30 pm. Clearly, the Hare had either mellowed with age or finally discovered the concept of a timetable.
The facts were as follows: 31 Hashers, run number 2400 and the theme of “Breathe.”What could possibly go wrong?
The Run
Proceedings began at approximately 6:31 pm, with appointed Hare Thrillseeker delivering the run instructions in his own distinctive style: largely comprehensible, provided one was fluent in Hare, interpretive dance and mild panic.

As usual, the first real challenge came at the traffic lights on the corner of Main Road, New Town and Risdon Road. The pack faced the traditional Hash decision: cross properly at the lights, cross wherever and terrify passing motorists, or simply follow whoever looked the most confident. Most of us sensibly watched the front-running bastards discover an FT in Foster Street before realising that the correct route involved turning right and continuing up Main Road.
About 400 metres into the adventure, the pack entered Hobart City High School. The school holidays no doubt made this easier for the Hare, as there were no students present to witness him placing markings consisting a white substance.
Once through the school, the trail followed a dirt track at the rear and emerged into Valentine Street. Here, the walkers turned right into Foster Street and headed steadily toward Garrington Park.
The runners, meanwhile, were offered a slightly more energetic interpretation of the word breathe.
They crossed the grassy walkway to Gregson Avenue, tackled the hill and followed tracks around the Aurora Energy offices. From there, they headed downhill past Lenah Valley Primary School, crossed Creek Road, climbed Kiewa Rise and then encountered the pièce de résistance: the Sawyer Steps.
At this point, the theme became entirely clear. The theme was not merely “Breathe”; it was more accurately, “Attempt to Breathe While Questioning Your Life Choices.”
The Sawyer Steps delivered exactly what was promised: a vigorous reminder that lungs are not merely decorative. Reaching the top of Sawyer Avenue, the runners were no doubt delighted to discover that the trail finally headed downhill. They ran down Sawyer Avenue, through Highfield Street and into Gerrard Street, eventually picking up the walkers’ trail near Creek Road. From there it was into Church Avenue, through the St John’s Park complex, and then—thankfully—history.
The Walk
The walkers entered Garrington Park, made their way around Noble drive and passed the children’s playground, where several members briefly considered abandoning Hash altogether in favour of the swings.
Then came the uphill section, with the trail rising toward William Cooper Drive. During this gentle ascent, which felt remarkably similar to scaling Mount Wellington, I enjoyed a chat with Arse Cutter regarding his pending nuptials. While he waited for Grass Roots to join him, I carried on with Shit Creek, who shared tales of a day involving a road trip to Devonport via New Norfolk and then back to Hobart. Clearly, some Hashers prefer to complete their endurance events before the Hash even begins.
At the top, the views were genuinely breathtaking—although, admittedly, this may have had something to do with the climb. With a trusty torch we somehow rediscovered the trail behind Lenah Valley Primary School and were delighted to find ourselves heading downhill along Creek Road.
The trail performed a particularly nasty U-turn, sending us back into Church Avenue as part of the St John’s Park complex. We continued along St John’s Park Avenue, then finally spotted the blessed route back toward the Maypole only a few hundred metres away.
The sight of the Maypole produced immediate relief, renewed energy and a remarkable recovery in everyone’s breathing.
Theme: “Breathe”
The theme inspired several creative interpretations. Brazilian and Clearfield arrived equipped with diving masks, apparently anticipating either an underwater trail or a particularly sweaty run. Next Week unearthed an old LP titled Breathe, demonstrating that a record collection can, in fact, be useful after all.
I selected the more conventional face-mask option, although I did not actually wear it.
Final Verdict
Thrillseeker delivered a superbly marked, well-designed and surprisingly civilised Hash run. There were hills, steps, confusion at traffic lights, a few strategic FTs and enough exertion to fully justify the theme—but nobody required a rescue team, a compass or a late-night taxi from an unknown suburb.
A great run, a strong turnout and everyone was back in time for food. For Thrillseeker, that may qualify as a minor miracle.
